Through intimate association, Keith Matheson has learned to respect wood's elusive, often surprising characteristics. He believes wood-types to be much like people-types, variable not only in appearance but also in substance & mood.

"The art of carving is more than the application of a formal skill; it is an intuitive dialogue with the wood."

"Most people spend their lives hiding their true feelings, trying to make themselves less vulnerable. In my work I try to get through to them, to help them experience what I have put into it."

"I don't seem to be telling my hands what to do, I just watch them; sometimes I forget about sleeping; I have to finish what I am working on, to find out what I will end up with. There are times when I am truly amazed. Afterwards I feel exhausted, drained."

Keith likes to work at night because he feels freer. Music also seems to add something.  For 30+ years, Keith has carved a multitude of Wood Spirits, faces that emerge from the grain and contours of the wood. Samples of his work are prominently displayed in over 25 countries throughout the world.

Keith has had studios in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia. He is the Ship's Carver for the Ship Hector in Pictou, at the re-enactment of Privateer Days Liverpool, the Maitland Launch Days, and at the Living Village for Hector Days in Pictou. His studio, Carvers Studio and Coffee House is located at the Waterfront, Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada.

He instructs Wood Carving classes on-site at Carvers Studio.  Upcoming class information is found on the Tools & Activities Page, or drop in to see him, and add your name to our list.
